History of the UVA Community Credit Union

It was the time of the 1950s. Many government agencies, universities, and corporations in the region created a number of credit unions to meet the financial needs of their employees, and UVA Hospital was among them.

History of the UVA

Daniel D. Colcock, along with a group of University of Virginia Hospital administrators founded the University of Virginia Hospital Employees Credit Union in 1954.

The University of Virginia Hospital Employees Credit Union expanded and extended its membership to other employee groups, while simultaneously absorbing, a number of smaller local credit unions.

In 1976, the University of Virginia Hospital Employees Credit Union changed its name to the University of Virginia Employees Credit Union.

Very soon, it got merged with credit unions serving employees of Martha Jefferson Hospital, the City of Charlottesville, Albemarle County, and other organizations.

The year 1997 was a pivotal one for the Credit Union. It was observed that the small banks around the country were closing or being absorbed by much larger competitors.

In response, the UVA Community Credit Union’s leadership decided that it had a responsibility to offer the advantages of local banking to more and more people in Central Virginia.

With the approval of the State Corporation Commission, the credit union adopted a community charter and subsequently, changed its name to University of Virginia Community Credit Union.

The financial education of young people is taken into consideration at the credit union.

The Credit Union has a growing number of student-run branches in local high schools, and it offers scholarships to a senior at each of the area high schools.

UVA Credit was successful in  presenting its annual tuition scholarship of $1,500 to an outstanding high school senior, with the enthusiastic support of the members in attendance at their annual meeting.

Eighteen scholarships were awarded to students in a combination of public high schools, private schools, alternative schools and students who are homeschooled in counties located in the credit union field of membership, which includes Charlottesville, Albemarle, Culpeper, Fauquier, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, Madison, Nelson, Orange, or Rappahannock.

  • Community Partnerships

UVA Community Credit Union is a very active member of The Thomas Jefferson Area Earned Income Tax Credit Coalition. This coalition supports low- to moderate-income working families in Central Virginia.

The Thomas Jefferson Area Earned Income Tax Credit Coalition provides free tax preparation assistance and financial education.

It also promotes the full use of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) for eligible taxpayers.

According to the IRS estimates, 15 to 20 percent of eligible workers do not claim their EITC benefits.

This statistic doesn’t augurs well as it means that millions of dollars are not finding their way into the pockets of the working families and individuals who are eligible to save.

This directly points out towards the fact that too many people are going without a savings they could be using to help care for their family, as well as provide a much needed funds injection into their local economy.

  • Community Partner Groups ( CPGs)

The employee benefit that is most appreciated is financial education. However, to find a trusted source of financial information is very difficult.

Hence, UVA Credit Union has created the Community Partner Group program, which aims to provide a variety of free financial benefits to local organizations.

Credit Union representatives consult with human resources personnel at area businesses, academic institutions, and nonprofits, as part of the aforementioned program.

Working together, they develop a customized suite of financial benefit services.

Topics like budgeting, understanding credit, savings and investment planning, and fraud and security are included in the educational seminar.

For employees, UVA Community Credit Union’s objective is to encourage savings and maximize employee contributions to retirement plans.

Achievements of the Credit Union

Time and again, UVA Community Credit Union has shown it’s worth by receiving a variety of community accolades.
