History of the GNCU

It was a relatively chilly day on Jan. 24, 1949, Carson City, Nevada, with a high of 24 °F and a low of 13 °F, and modest breezes making it feel much colder, though otherwise a seemingly innocent Monday in the state’s capital city.

And yet a historic event was taking place that would affect generations to come.

From that day onwards, a handful of state government workers, who had spent weeks of their personal time and energy to find a locally based cooperative to help meet the financial needs of its members, received the official charter for the Nevada State Employees Federal Credit Union.

The founders of the Greater Nevada Credit Union, back in 1949 could not have dreamed that their credit union would grow to more than 68,000 members and over $965 million in assets with a branch footprint that extends well beyond it’s Carson City roots.

  • Greater Commercial Lending

Greater Commercial Lending (GCL) is Greater Nevada Credit Union’s  wholly owned business lending arm.

Formed in December 2017, Greater Commercial Lending (GCL) hit the ground running in 2018 by obligation of the largest loan in the history of the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Biorefinery, Renewable Chemical, and the Bio based Product Manufacturing Assistance Program.

The loan pledge was made to Ryze Renewables Reno, LLC.

GCL was responsible for the nearly $344 million in loans during its first full year of existence to companies in Nevada and across the nation.

The aforementioned generated business capital helped to create and preserve nearly 1,200 jobs within the U.S. economy with a direct annual wage impact of more than $66 million, further spreading our passion “To Help More People Live Greater” well beyond the borders of Nevada.
